Camps of all kinds

While the US clearly created internment camps for people of Japanese descent Nazi Germany created its camps for it criminal element and its political enemies. In the 1930s the camps in Germany were visited by international organizations and nothing unusual was reported.

The horror stories that come out of Germany all come from the end of the war. At that time the Allies had complete air superiority and were destroying everything they could. Food production was nearly at a standstill and food distribution was a target for the planes.

Power plants, fuel production, everything needed to maintain civilized conditions in Germany were in short supply. Under such conditions it would be expected that the camps would be in worse condition. And when the allies discovered the conditions in the camps, they were not about to accept excuse.

Lets turn the story around a bit. One way or another, America manages to lose WW II to Japan. In the final months of the war Japan had bombed America into submission, destroying every fixed and mobile asset they could find.

The camps for the Japanese Americans were without power, food, water or medicine or in such short supply that people were emaciated, dying and many of them already dead. And here come the camp liberators to discover what the Americans had done to people of Japanese descent. It is unlikely they would have been willing to listen calmly to excuses.

The "evil" of the Americans would be proven forever, just to have created such camps. Those who ran the camps would be names taught in all the history books as incarnate evil. And the most evil of then all, FDR, would be the personification of evil for all the world -- not just for Republicans.

And what is the difference between the two cases? Only the difference between winning and losing. Who knows? Perhaps the Japanese would have even found gas chambers in the camps.
