The Mavi Mamara raid was over a year ago. In the raid Israelis murdered nine
citizens of Turkey execution style. One of the nine was also an American
citizen which does not bother most Americans nor was it worth diplomatic
notice.
This was not much of an issue for Turkey. Diplomatic relations before the
murders were in the toilet after Israel deliberately insulted the Turk
ambassador on TV. Afterwards Turkey prepared to flush.
Currently Turkey is demanding three things to return diplomatic relations to
normal, a formal apology, financial compensation to the families of the
murdered and an end to the blockade of Gaza. This is an opportunity for a
learning exercise.
Israel is going through all kinds of public posturing as "agonizing" over
the "unintentional" execution style killings but is considering apologizing
and paying some compensation in the larger interests of Israel. Israel will
eventually apologize and agree to pay compensation. There is so much media
attention and so much posturing in preparation for it there is no way it
cannot happen.
After Israel does offer an apology and agree to pay reparations Turkey will
say, No Deal! Israel will then whine that it gave Turkey all it demanded
along with choruses of
- Why do they hate us so?
- It was so hard to do what we did even if we didn't mean it.
- It hurt us to do what we didn't do.
- We are suffering so dramatically for what we didn't do.
- They should be grateful to have Jews as friends.
Israeli politicians will go livid. The US will bark as its master's
commands.
And in all of this the part about ending to blockade of Gaza will be as
though it never existed. Should Turkey remind the world of the third
requirement it will be treated as a last minute addition to block an
agreement.
Watch the situation and learn.
