Looks like the fundies were at least partially right.

Recent application of chemical etching and neutron analysis of "Lucy" has found the words "patent pending" imprinted on the skull.

Researchers have yet to determine if the patent was originally issued as the idea does not appear to be sufficiently novel on its face. However they warn that if it was issued it may still be in effect through continuous improvement of the design. If so then the holder in due course of the patent rights would maintain control of the present design.

Just who the present holder may be is unknown. The Japanese are suspected.
