True Story

Many years ago I worked for one of two very old and good friends. They had served on the same ship in WWII and at the time were working for the Naval Ship Systems Command in Washington, DC. At one time they were both smokers.

Some years before I met them Andy had quit smoking while Ray continued to smoke cigars. They rarely had a conversation where Ray did not light up to provoke Andy or Andy did not bring up smoking even if Ray was not. Andy would go into some variation upon the "saved" nonsmoker warning Ray of everything the Surgeon General could imagine in addition to variations upon the "dirty habit" routine.

Ray's traditional answer was, "But Andy, what happens if I get killed by a speeding truck? Look at all the pleasure I will have missed."

Now that I have telegraphed the ending, Andy died of complications of being hit by a speeding truck.
